Tested by Baxter, our Head of Lead & Harness Testing – a one-year-old black Labrador with an athletic build, an intelligent expression and an established habit of inserting himself into the centre of any outdoor activity. The Trail Pack in Orange L was introduced on a Tuesday before a six-mile circuit. The hook-and-loop neck strap was fastened first, then the chest strap buckled and adjusted – the whole fitting took ninety seconds from box to walk-ready. Baxter showed no interest in the pack beyond a single backward glance at the orange colour and then proceeded to walk at his usual pace for the full six miles without any change in posture or gait. The two side pouches carried a 500ml water bottle each; the bungee exterior pocket held a rolled lead and a poo bag dispenser. All items were accessible without stopping. The UTX leash clips were assessed on two road crossings; the connection held and the fit remained centred throughout. The water-resistant outer was tested after a river crossing; the outer beaded and dried within twenty minutes, the mesh lining remained dry. Workshop test: both zip pulls cycled four hundred times; all strap buckles stress-tested at twice Baxter’s pack weight.

His verdict: he ran back to the spot where the pack had been left between outings, sat down beside it and waited to be fitted. The test panel considered this conclusive.
