Tested by Woody, our Large Breed Correspondent – a six-year-old brindle Great Dane who approaches new equipment with the measured scepticism of a dog who has been fitted in many harnesses and has strong views about all of them. The Tactical Pack in Black L was fitted on a Saturday morning. The chest and belly straps adjusted to Woody’s frame in three minutes; the breathable mesh back panel sat flat without bunching at the shoulders. The rubber top handle was gripped during two road crossings and gave confident, immediate control. The detachable saddle bag was loaded with a 500ml water bottle, a collapsible bowl and four training treats and clipped to the MOLLE webbing in under thirty seconds; Woody showed no change in gait or posture under load. The two-way zipper was operated one-handed at pace and opened cleanly on each occasion. The bag was detached and reattached twelve times during the trial period; the MOLLE connection held firm on every occasion. Workshop test: all four buckle points were stress-tested at twice Woody’s pack weight; the D-ring was load-tested at 80kg and held without flex.

His verdict: he stood still for the fitting on every occasion after the first, which from Woody is participation bordering on enthusiasm.
