Tested by Gem, our Chief Collar & Lead Tester – an adult female fox red Labrador with a rich russet coat, a confident compact build and a yellow rubber duck toy she carries on principle. The Retractable Lead in Orange 5m was clipped to her collar for a fortnight of daily walks: park mornings with the full five metres in play, pavement routes with the cord locked short. The single-button lock operated cleanly one-handed in both directions – forward to stop her mid-investigation, back to release – and the cord retracted quietly without any judder at any extension. The swivel hook prevented the cord from twisting even on Gem’s more spirited circuits. The handle sat comfortably in one hand for ninety-minute outings without tiring the grip. In the workshop the lock-and-release mechanism was cycled three hundred times; the retraction spring remained consistent throughout.

Her verdict: she covered more ground, the rubber duck was retrieved faster, and she had no complaints about the lead specifically.
